About this tide and surge data

This page shows a combined view of the astronomical tide and the weather-driven surge expected at Teignmouth Sea Front. It provides a clear picture of how predicted tide height and short-term water-level changes evolve through the next 48 hours.

The astronomical tide curve is an approximation. It is created by smoothly interpolating between predicted high and low waters using a cosine-based model. This produces a realistic tide shape for visualisation, but it is not a full harmonic tide prediction. True harmonic modelling uses many tidal constituents with individual amplitudes and phases, which require specialist datasets that are not publicly available for Teignmouth.

A simple spring and neap adjustment is applied using lunar phase. This changes the steepness of the rising and falling tide to reflect typical spring and neap behaviour.

What surge means

Surge is the weather-driven change in sea level that sits on top of the astronomical tide. It reflects how air pressure, wind and wave action temporarily raise or lower the water level along the coast. Surge can increase the height of high tide, reduce the height of low tide, or shift the timing of both. It is a key factor in short-term coastal conditions and is especially important during unsettled weather.

Pressure setup

Shows how air pressure affects sea level. Lower pressure allows the sea surface to rise. A drop of 1 hPa typically raises sea level by about 1 cm.

Wind setup

Represents the rise in water level caused by wind pushing water toward the shore. Onshore winds increase water level. Offshore winds reduce it.

Wave setup

Shows the additional rise caused by breaking waves driving water landward. Larger waves produce a larger setup.

Surge

Surge is the combined effect of pressure setup, wind setup and wave setup. Surge values appear in the tooltip when hovering over the adjusted tide curve.

Wave and marine parameters are generated using the ICON Wave forecast model from the German Weather Service (DWD) via the Open-Meteo Marine Weather API.
Tide information is derived from the UKHO Admiralty Tide API.
