Teignmouth Swim & Surf Conditions (Draft Version)

A live hour-by-hour view of sea conditions for Teignmouth Town Beach near the pier, using Met Office weather data and Open-Meteo marine forecasts from the DWD EWAM model. The table shows how swell, chop, wave period, sea temperature, wind and tides are expected to change over the next 48 hours, with data refreshed hourly to support safe and informed coastal use.

The dashboard includes both surf and swimmer-focused information (you can toggle between the two), giving a clear picture of conditions along Teignmouth's south-east-facing coastline. Because the beach lies within Lyme Bay, local sea conditions at the shoreline can sometimes be calmer than offshore forecast wave heights alone might suggest. The Sea State and Wave Power indicators include adjustments to account for local coastal sheltering effects and are intended to better represent conditions experienced at the beach.

Forecast Data Table Entries Time Forecast time in UK local time (GMT/BST). Air Temperature Forecast air temperature (°C). Weather Forecast weather conditions shown using standard weather symbols. Wind Forecast wind speed and direction. Sea Temperature Forecast sea surface temperature (°C). Next Tide Next predicted high or low tide and time remaining. Swell Peak Period The dominant swell period in seconds. Longer periods generally indicate more powerful swell. Wave Height Total significant wave height, including swell and wind waves.

Local Note: Wave heights are taken directly from the offshore forecast model. At Teignmouth Town Beach, winds from the south-west through north-west often produce less local wave activity than the model suggests because Lyme Bay provides some shelter. The Swim Mode Sea State and Wave Power classifications include an adjustment for this local sheltering effect.

Note on “Glassy”:
The term “Glassy” appears in both Surf Mode and Swim Mode, but it describes different conditions depending on context.

Surf Mode – Glassy: A mirror‑like wave face with organised swell lines, clean breaking shape, and almost no chop. Requires very light offshore or cross‑offshore winds and enough wave size for the smoothness to be visible.

Swim Mode – Glassy: A calm, smooth sea surface with minimal disturbance and very small waves. It does not require organised swell or surfable wave shape.

In short: surfer-glassy means clean, surfable waves with perfect faces; swimmer-glassy means calm water with almost no wave action.

Data sources and acknowledgements:
Wave and marine parameters are generated using the ICON Wave forecast model from the German Weather Service (DWD) via the Open‑Meteo Marine Weather API. Tide information is derived from the UKHO Admiralty Tide API. Atmospheric weather data (air temperature, weather type, and wind) are provided by the Met Office DataHub.
