Hourly Synoptic Observations Map & 24-Hour Archive

This experimental map shows land and marine synoptic weather station data observed at official weather stations operated by the Met Office, Met Éireann, Jersey Met, and the Ronaldsway Met Office.

The underlying data comes from OGIMET and is processed to produce the map you see here. Updates are published twice an hour - usually around twenty and thirty minutes past - along with a rolling 25-hour archive. If you choose an earlier time, you can step through the archive using the left and right arrow keys on a desktop keyboard. You can also zoom in and out and toggle individual map layers to suit what you want to explore.

If the newest data doesn't appear straight away, refreshing the page will usually bring it through. A few small issues are still being ironed out, including some ships which actually report wind speeds in metres per second but I've assumed that they are in knots. I've also yet to incorporate ocean buoy data and plan to implement these upgrades over the coming weeks once they've been tested. Most stations are now automatic, which is why their locations are shown with triangles rather than circles.

Guidance on interpreting these maps is available from the Met Office and the Royal Meteorological Society, though some of that material is due for updating - particularly where automatic stations use different present weather codes and symbols. I will eventually add a full interpretation guide to this site.
